Flights :: Flight Information :: Flight Safety

Flight safety measures encompass everything humanly possible in ensuring flights are uneventful from take-off to landing. As such, every air traveler plays a very important role in flight safety even as you are encouraged to take full responsibility for your own safety during a flight. Manufacturers and aircraft designers of aircrafts are proud to be recognized as two of the most important factors that contribute to the world’s safest and most efficient form of transportation – air travel. When rare accidents occur, more people survive due to technological advancements in all aspects of aircraft manufacturing. From the structure and body design, to the air traffic control technology, the emergency planning, and the level of cabin safety.

Travelers should endeavor to always listen to the flight safety briefing because every aircraft is different. There are simple tips to ensure that you are familiar with the aircraft you are on. Try to use the passenger safety card by taking it out of the seat pocket and following the crew’s safety briefing, in fact try to follow them as they demonstrate. Also, take time to review the safety card shortly before take-offs and landings. One of the best things you can do to be prepared is to psychologically plan the flight safety actions you would need to take in case of an emergency.

There is no overstating the fact that you must fasten your seat belts while aboard and at all times. Of all the safety features aboard the aircraft, it is one of the most important and is right within your fingertips. In a recent study, nearly three hundred turbulence-related serious injuries to passengers were reported over a ten-year period. None of the injured had their seat belts fastened. To prevent this type of unnecessary injury, travelers should always fasten their seat belts. If you have any questions about the flight safety procedures, do not hesitate to ask the flight attendant. Flight attendants are as good as professionals because they know about the flight safety procedures of the aircraft well enough to answer questions bordering on flight safety.

For more on the flight’s safety, airlines restrict carry-on baggage to two pieces per passenger. For this reason, carry-on bags must be small enough to fit under the seat in front of you or in the overhead bins. It's a good idea to put the heavier items under the seat. Some carry-on items could become flying projectiles during turbulence which is dangerous to the heads of passengers. During such times, heavy items of hand luggage with sharp corners could become weapons. All hazardous materials are restricted due to their threat to the safety of flights. They could be dangerous if checked into an aircraft. Tear gas and other irritants are examples of such items because of their flammability due to their chemical contents. These items pose great dangers to flight safety when carried in an airplane.

Good examples of types of hazardous materials that are most likely to be rejected from boarding flights are aerosols containing flammable materials like hair spray, deodorant, repellents, firearms and ammunition, paint materials, corrosive liquids, poisonous, infectious, and radioactive materials. However, this list is not all-inclusive with regards to flight safety. There are certain exceptions for personal care, medical needs, and equipment to support physically challenged passengers. Some airlines also have relaxed restrictions for sporting equipment. Flight safety has become a very important issue with constant emerging threats. Therefore, all passengers will do well to help authorities prevent future attacks as this will not only jeopardize the safety of the airlines’ flights but their lives as well.

There is more on clothing concerning flight safety. For ease of movement and protection in the event of an evacuation, travelers should wear clothes made of natural fabrics such as cotton because they offer the best protection. On the other hand, synthetic materials may melt when they are heated. Try to wear clothing that allows freedom of movement. Avoid restrictive clothing when taking a flight for your own safety. Always wear low heeled shoes or boots. Shoes with laces or straps are recommended. Your arms and legs should be as fully covered as possible. When in doubt as to what to do at anytime before, during or after the flight, make sure to check with any of the flight crew members.
